Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a dermatologist?
To become a skin specialist, it is best to be prepared for years of study. Training starts with general studies in medicine. This takes six years. If you pass, you can work as a general practitioner but not yet as a dermatologist. For that, you need to complete five more years of specialization. During these years, students will do internships in various dermatology departments and receive training from experienced doctors in order to master each field. Most of this training takes place in a university center.
How does a dermatologist work?
A dermatologist may work in a hospital or in a practice, according to preference. This practice can be a solo practice or a group practice where several doctors or dermatologists work. The dermatologist is usually supported by support staff, a secretary, nurse, podiatrist, pedicurist, skin therapist or beautician.
Can you just go to a dermatologist?
Do you need a referral letter to see a dermatologist or not? This is often unclear. The answer is yes and no. If you want reimbursement, then a referral letter is needed. If reimbursement is not required, then you can see the dermatologist without a referral letter. After all, the dermatologist also performs treatments that do not require a visit to the doctor, such as aesthetic procedures. These are not reimbursed. So a referral letter is not required but it will make your visit to the dermatologist cheaper. Through Skindr, there is never a reimbursement and you do not need a referral letter.
What does a visit to the dermatologist cost?
In Belgium, you pay between 50 and 90 euros for a visit to the dermatologist. Of that, you get 21 euros back through the health insurance company. In the Netherlands, prices can reach more than 100 euros for a simple treatment. As long as the health insurance company pays for this consultation, the patient does not suffer. If not, it is sometimes a shock when one gets the bill. With Skindr, consultations are not reimbursed. However, a consultation costs only from 39 euros. Moreover, you are helped within 48 hours while the waiting time for a consultation in practice is 4 months in Belgium and 4 weeks in the Netherlands.
