1 in 50Belgians has psoriasis. It is a chronic condition that comes and goes in flare-ups. Skindr helps you keep the patches under control, without long waiting times.
In short
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease in which skin cells renew much faster than normal. This causes red, clearly defined patches with silvery-white scales, often on the elbows, knees and scalp. Around 1 in 50 Belgians has psoriasis. It is not contagious and cannot be cured, but treatment can greatly reduce the symptoms.
What is psoriasis?
A chronic skin condition that comes in flare-ups.
With psoriasis, your immune system is overactive. As a result, your skin makes new cells much faster than normal: what usually takes around four weeks happens within a few days. The cells pile up into red, thickened patches with white scales.
The tendency is hereditary, but triggers play a big role: stress, an infection such as a sore throat, certain medicines, smoking, alcohol or a skin injury. Psoriasis often appears on the elbows, knees, lower back and scalp, and is not contagious.
Psoriasis is more than a skin problem. It can affect your confidence and your sleep, and sometimes your joints too. It can't be cured, but with the right treatment most people keep their skin calm for long periods.

Types of psoriasis our dermatologists assess

Plaque psoriasis
The most common form: red, thickened patches with white scales, often on the elbows, knees and lower back.
Around 90% of people with psoriasis have this form. If you gently scrape off a scale, you often see tiny pinpoint bleeding spots. For mild to moderate patches, a topical treatment is usually enough. For widespread psoriasis, your dermatologist will discuss other options, such as light therapy.

Scalp psoriasis
Thick, scaly patches on your scalp that sometimes extend beyond the hairline, onto the forehead or behind your ears.
In around half of people with psoriasis, the scalp is affected too. It is often mistaken for dandruff. Special shampoos and lotions loosen the scales and calm the inflammation. Your dermatologist will explain how best to apply them.

Guttate psoriasis
Lots of small, drop-shaped spots on the torso, arms and legs, often appearing suddenly after a sore throat.
This form mainly affects young people and often appears suddenly after an infection, such as a sore throat. A dermatologist confirms the diagnosis and suggests a treatment.

Inverse psoriasis
Red, smooth and shiny patches without scales in skin folds, such as your armpits, groin or between your buttocks.
Because the typical scales are missing, this form is harder to recognise. Your dermatologist chooses a treatment suited to these sensitive areas.

Nail psoriasis
Pits, yellow or brown spots, thickened nails or nails lifting off the nail bed.
Nail changes occur in around half of people with psoriasis. They're stubborn and need patience, because nails grow slowly. They sometimes go hand in hand with joint problems, so your dermatologist will ask about that too.

Pustular psoriasis
A rare form with pustules or blisters, often on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
This form can have a big impact on your daily life. Your dermatologist assesses whether treatment can happen online or whether an in-person visit is needed.
Symptoms of psoriasis
Psoriasis looks different for everyone. Read more about what you're seeing, or have your skin checked by a dermatologist straight away.
The typical patches are red, raised and clearly defined, often on the outer side of your elbows and knees. A topical treatment calms the inflammation and makes the patches thinner.
More about psoriasis patchesBecause of the faster cell turnover, dead skin cells pile up as white scales. Scratching or picking often makes it worse. An ointment that loosens the scales helps other treatments work better.
More about scalingMany people with psoriasis also experience itching. A rich cream and a short, lukewarm shower already help. If the itch keeps disturbing your sleep, get your treatment adjusted.
More about itchingScalp psoriasis is often mistaken for dandruff or seborrhoeic eczema. The scales are thicker and the patches more clearly defined. A targeted shampoo or lotion makes all the difference.
More about scalp psoriasisIn around half of people with psoriasis, the nails are affected too: small pits, thickening, discolouration or a nail lifting off. Be sure to mention it to your dermatologist, as it sometimes goes hand in hand with joint problems.
More about nail psoriasisIn 10 to 30% of people with psoriasis, the joints become inflamed too. This is called psoriatic arthritis. Recognising it early is important to prevent lasting damage. If you have these symptoms, your dermatologist will refer you for further tests.

How can I start a consultation for my child?
To use Skindr independently, you must be at least 18 years old. As a parent, you can start a consultation for your child through your own Skindr account.
Here's how it works:
- Start a new consultation and indicate that it is for your child.
- Enter your child's details.
- Upload clear photos and describe the skin concern as thoroughly as possible.
- Enter your own contact details.
As the parent, you communicate directly with the dermatologist through Skindr and can ask additional questions.
You can also start a consultation in the same way for another family member or someone you are responsible for.
What if I still need an in-person appointment?
In 95% of cases, the dermatologist can assess your skin concern online based on photos and the information you provide, and offer personalized medical advice. During the assessment, the dermatologist will also determine whether an in-person appointment or further examination is needed.
If your skin concern needs to be examined in person, the dermatologist will let you know and advise you on the next steps. Where possible, Skindr can help refer you for further examination.
Can I discuss multiple skin concerns during one consultation?
One consultation is intended for one patient and one specific skin concern. During the consultation, the dermatologist reviews everything related to that concern. If you have several separate skin concerns, such as acne and eczema, start a separate consultation for each one. This allows the dermatologist to assess each concern carefully and give it the attention it needs.
Who can use Skindr?
To use Skindr independently, you must be at least 18 years old. As a parent, you can start a consultation for your child if they are under 18. You can also start a consultation for another family member or someone you are responsible for.

When should you see someone in person?
Skindr can help with most forms of psoriasis. In a few situations, you're better off seeing your GP or a dermatologist in person:
Your psoriasis covers a large part of your body.
Your joints are painful, stiff or swollen. This can point to psoriatic arthritis.
You need light therapy. This takes place two to three times a week for several months, in a clinic or hospital.
Treatment with injections is needed. This requires close follow-up by a dermatologist.
Not sure? Go ahead and start a consultation. Our dermatologists will refer you straight away if an in-person appointment is better, and in that case you pay nothing.
