In short

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition in the centre of the face, with redness, visible blood vessels and sometimes bumps and pustules. It usually starts between the ages of 30 and 50 and mainly affects people with fair skin. Flare-ups are set off by triggers such as sun, heat, alcohol or stress. Rosacea is not contagious and cannot be cured, but it can be treated well.

What is rosacea?

A common but often misunderstood skin condition.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammation of the skin in the centre of your face: cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. It often starts with flushing easily and can progress to persistent redness, visible blood vessels and bumps or pustules. It mainly appears from your thirties onwards, and more often in people with fair skin.

The exact cause is unknown. Heredity, an oversensitive immune response and the small blood vessels in your skin all play a role, as does the demodex mite that lives on everyone's skin. Sun, wind, heat, alcohol, spicy food, hot drinks and stress can trigger a flare-up.

Rosacea is often mistaken for acne, eczema or simple blushing, even though it needs its own approach. It can't be cured, but with the right skincare, avoiding your triggers and targeted treatment, you can keep the symptoms well under control.

Which type of rosacea do you have?

Types of rosacea our dermatologists assess

Redness and visible blood vessels
Bumps and pustules
Thickened skin
Ocular rosacea
1 / 4
Roodheid en adertjes

Redness and visible blood vessels

Persistent redness in the centre of your face, flushing easily and visible small blood vessels. Often the first form of rosacea.

Sun protection, gentle skincare and avoiding your triggers are the basis. Creams are less effective against persistent redness and visible blood vessels. A laser or IPL treatment in a clinic can reduce them, although several sessions are usually needed.

Bultjes en puistjes

Bumps and pustules

Red bumps and pustules on a red background, mainly on the cheeks, chin and nose. Often mistaken for acne.

This is called papulopustular rosacea. Unlike acne, there are no blackheads. An anti-inflammatory cream or gel is the basis, and once things improve, maintenance treatment is important. Acne products are usually too harsh for this skin.

Verdikte huid

Thickened skin

The skin, usually on the nose, becomes thicker and bumpy. This form is rare and mainly affects older men.

In severe cases, the nose becomes thickened (rhinophyma). The excess tissue can then be removed in a clinic, for example with a laser. Your dermatologist will discuss the options with you.

Oculaire rosacea

Ocular rosacea

Dry, burning or red eyes, sometimes even before your skin shows symptoms. Around half of people with rosacea have eye problems.

Your eyes may feel gritty, water or be sensitive to light. Cleaning your eyelids regularly with a special cleanser helps. With severe eye symptoms, you need an eye specialist.

Symptoms of rosacea

Sound familiar? Then it's time to do something about it

Rosacea looks different for everyone. Read more about what you're seeing, or have your skin checked by a dermatologist straight away.

Flushing or hot flushes
Your face suddenly turns red and feels warm.

With rosacea, the small blood vessels in your face react more strongly to triggers such as heat, alcohol or stress. A trigger diary helps you discover what sets off a flare-up for you.

More about flushing
Persistent redness
On the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead.

Where blushing fades on its own, the redness of rosacea lasts longer or even becomes permanent. Sun protection and avoiding your triggers are the basis. Your dermatologist discusses which treatment suits your skin.

More about redness
Visible blood vessels
Fine red lines, mainly on the cheeks and nose.

Dilated blood vessels, also known as couperose or thread veins, don't go away with a cream. A laser or IPL treatment in a clinic can reduce them, although several sessions are usually needed. Your dermatologist will tell you whether it makes sense for you.

More about visible blood vessels
Bumps and pustules
Look like acne, but without blackheads.

Red bumps and pustules in the centre of your face often point to rosacea. Acne products are often too harsh and can make it worse. An anti-inflammatory treatment does work.

More about rosacea bumps
A burning, sensitive skin
Stings or burns, especially during a flare-up.

Skin with rosacea reacts quickly to fragrance, alcohol in products or scrubs. Choose gentle, fragrance-free products and test anything new on a small patch of skin first.

More about sensitive skin
Dry, burning or red eyes
A gritty feeling or inflamed eyelid margins.

Around half of people with rosacea also have eye problems, sometimes even before the skin reacts. Cleaning your eyelids regularly helps. Be sure to mention eye symptoms to your dermatologist; with severe symptoms, you need an eye specialist.

Sabine
I was helped quickly and professionally and received clear information about the next steps. My skin rash has since cleared up. If I had known about these dermatologists months earlier, I would have taken this step much sooner. Even though it was online and I was initially skeptical, that feeling quickly disappeared after the first contact. Very professional.
Fantastic experience! First consultation on Sunday morning and already a clear answer in the evening
Nathalie
Very easy app, easy to use and user-friendly. Received an answer within 1 day with a clear explanation and follow-up from a skincare assistant. Very satisfied.
Fine dermatologist. Fantastic service that I can recommend to everyone.
Carine
You will be helped very quickly and receive clear information about the next steps. You can also ask additional questions after your consultation. My husband, my eldest son, who struggled with severe acne, and I were all very well helped. Top service! Thank you!
Top service! Completely rid of my acne.
Olivier
I found it a positive experience because I was helped when the problem occurred. After all, it is almost impossible to consult a dermatologist with a skin condition without a hell of a long wait. Which means that the problem is often no longer or unclear.
Top service! Completely rid of my acne.

How can I start a consultation for my child?

To use Skindr independently, you must be at least 18 years old. As a parent, you can start a consultation for your child through your own Skindr account.

Here's how it works:

  1. Start a new consultation and indicate that it is for your child.
  2. Enter your child's details.
  3. Upload clear photos and describe the skin concern as thoroughly as possible.
  4. Enter your own contact details.

As the parent, you communicate directly with the dermatologist through Skindr and can ask additional questions.

You can also start a consultation in the same way for another family member or someone you are responsible for.

What if I still need an in-person appointment?

In 95% of cases, the dermatologist can assess your skin concern online based on photos and the information you provide, and offer personalized medical advice. During the assessment, the dermatologist will also determine whether an in-person appointment or further examination is needed.

If your skin concern needs to be examined in person, the dermatologist will let you know and advise you on the next steps. Where possible, Skindr can help refer you for further examination.

Can I discuss multiple skin concerns during one consultation?

One consultation is intended for one patient and one specific skin concern. During the consultation, the dermatologist reviews everything related to that concern. If you have several separate skin concerns, such as acne and eczema, start a separate consultation for each one. This allows the dermatologist to assess each concern carefully and give it the attention it needs.

How does a Skindr consultation work?

An online consultation through Skindr takes place in a few simple steps:

  1. Describe your skin concern and upload clear photos using your smartphone.
  2. A dermatologist reviews your photos and the information you provided.
  3. If additional information is needed, the dermatologist may ask you to provide more details or upload additional photos.
  4. After the assessment, you receive personalized medical advice and clear information about the next steps in the Skindr app.
  5. You’ll receive a notification when your dermatologist’s advice is available.
  6. You can then ask additional questions through the chat. How long you can do this depends on the type of consultation you selected.

If your skin concern cannot be sufficiently assessed online, the dermatologist will let you know and advise you on the next steps.

When should you see someone in person?

Skindr can help with most forms of rosacea. In a few situations, you're better off seeing your GP, a dermatologist or an eye specialist in person:

Your eyes are painful, very red or sensitive to light. In that case, you need an eye specialist.

You want visible blood vessels or persistent redness treated with a laser or IPL.

Your nose is getting thicker and bumpy, and you want the excess tissue removed.

Not sure? Go ahead and start a consultation. Our dermatologists will refer you straight away if an in-person appointment is better, and in that case you pay nothing.
