60%of men face hereditary hair loss sooner or later, and many women are affected too. Skindr helps you find the cause and limit further hair loss.
In short
Losing up to 100 hairs a day is normal. If you lose more, your hair gets visibly thinner or bald patches appear, we speak of hair loss. The most common cause is hereditary hair loss, but stress, hormonal changes, a thyroid problem or anaemia can also play a part. Temporary forms often recover on their own within a few months.
What is hair loss?
It's common, in men and women alike.
Your hair grows in a fixed cycle of growth, rest and shedding. So losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal: old hairs make way for new ones. We only speak of hair loss when you clearly lose more hair, your hair gets thinner or bald patches appear.
The most common cause is hereditary hair loss. In men, it starts with a receding hairline and a thinning crown; in women, the hair tends to thin all over. Stress, giving birth, the menopause, a thyroid problem, anaemia or a scalp condition can also cause hair loss.
Hair loss can knock your confidence, and that's completely understandable. The sooner you know the cause, the more you can do to limit further hair loss. Treatment does take patience: you'll only see results after a few months.

Types of hair loss our dermatologists assess

Hereditary hair loss
Androgenetic alopecia: a receding hairline and thinning crown in men, diffuse thinning of the hair in women.
Male hormones gradually shrink the hair follicles, so the hairs become thinner. It runs in families and affects around 60% of men sooner or later. In women, it usually starts between the ages of 40 and 60. Treatment can slow the process, but the effect only lasts as long as you keep it up.

Alopecia areata
Round or oval bald patches caused by an autoimmune reaction, in children and adults.
Your immune system attacks the hair follicles, but doesn't damage them permanently. The hair usually grows back on its own after a few months, although it can sometimes take longer. Your dermatologist discusses whether treatment makes sense and checks whether other causes are involved.

Telogen effluvium
Diffuse hair loss across your whole head, usually two to four months after severe stress, a serious infection, surgery or giving birth.
After a physical or emotional shock, lots of hairs stop growing at the same time. Because they only fall out months later, the cause can be hard to pin down. Your hair usually recovers on its own. Your dermatologist helps look for an underlying cause, such as a thyroid problem or anaemia.

Tinea capitis
A fungal infection of the scalp with localised bald patches, redness and scaling.
Your scalp may itch or feel sore. A fungal infection won't go away on its own and needs targeted treatment. Your dermatologist confirms the diagnosis and suggests the right approach.

Trichotillomania
Irregular, patchy bald areas because you feel the urge to pull out your own hair.
The patches are usually where you can easily reach. You're not alone in this. Your dermatologist looks at your scalp without judgement and thinks with you about the right support.

Hair loss from tight hairstyles
Thinner hair or small bald patches caused by hairstyles that pull on your hair for a long time, such as a tight ponytail.
Wear your hair down more often and vary your hairstyle, so your hair follicles are under less tension. Your dermatologist checks whether other causes are also involved.
Symptoms of hair loss
Hair loss looks different for everyone. Read more about what you're seeing, or have your scalp checked by a dermatologist straight away.
A hairline that gradually recedes is usually the start of hereditary hair loss. The earlier you act, the more you can do to slow the process down.
More about a receding hairlineWith hereditary hair loss, the hair on the crown gradually becomes thinner and shorter. In women, this often shows as a wider parting. Treatment can slow down further thinning.
More about thinning hairAfter severe stress, a serious infection, surgery or giving birth, lots of hairs can stop growing at the same time. They only fall out two to four months later. This is called telogen effluvium. It usually recovers on its own, but it's worth ruling out a thyroid problem or anaemia.
More about sudden hair lossRound, smooth bald patches often point to alopecia areata, where your immune system attacks the hair follicles. The hair usually grows back on its own after a few months. Your dermatologist discusses whether treatment makes sense.
More about bald patchesA red, flaky scalp together with bald patches can point to a fungal infection. It won't go away on its own and needs targeted treatment, so have it checked quickly.
More about your scalpIrregular bald patches sometimes appear when you feel the urge to pull out your own hair. This is called trichotillomania. Your dermatologist looks at it without judgement and thinks along with you.

How can I start a consultation for my child?
To use Skindr independently, you must be at least 18 years old. As a parent, you can start a consultation for your child through your own Skindr account.
Here's how it works:
- Start a new consultation and indicate that it is for your child.
- Enter your child's details.
- Upload clear photos and describe the skin concern as thoroughly as possible.
- Enter your own contact details.
As the parent, you communicate directly with the dermatologist through Skindr and can ask additional questions.
You can also start a consultation in the same way for another family member or someone you are responsible for.
What if I still need an in-person appointment?
In 95% of cases, the dermatologist can assess your skin concern online based on photos and the information you provide, and offer personalized medical advice. During the assessment, the dermatologist will also determine whether an in-person appointment or further examination is needed.
If your skin concern needs to be examined in person, the dermatologist will let you know and advise you on the next steps. Where possible, Skindr can help refer you for further examination.
Can I discuss multiple skin concerns during one consultation?
One consultation is intended for one patient and one specific skin concern. During the consultation, the dermatologist reviews everything related to that concern. If you have several separate skin concerns, such as acne and eczema, start a separate consultation for each one. This allows the dermatologist to assess each concern carefully and give it the attention it needs.
Who can use Skindr?
To use Skindr independently, you must be at least 18 years old. As a parent, you can start a consultation for your child if they are under 18. You can also start a consultation for another family member or someone you are responsible for.

How does a Skindr consultation work?
An online consultation through Skindr takes place in a few simple steps:
- Describe your skin concern and upload clear photos using your smartphone.
- A dermatologist reviews your photos and the information you provided.
- If additional information is needed, the dermatologist may ask you to provide more details or upload additional photos.
- After the assessment, you receive personalized medical advice and clear information about the next steps in the Skindr app.
- You’ll receive a notification when your dermatologist’s advice is available.
- You can then ask additional questions through the chat. How long you can do this depends on the type of consultation you selected.
If your skin concern cannot be sufficiently assessed online, the dermatologist will let you know and advise you on the next steps.
When should you see someone in person?
Skindr can help with most forms of hair loss. In a few situations, you're better off seeing your GP or a dermatologist in person:
Your hair loss comes with other symptoms, such as tiredness or a change in weight. A blood test at your GP is then a good idea.
Your scalp is red, painful or flaky and is getting worse quickly.
You want a treatment applied directly into the bald patches. This can only be done in a clinic.
Not sure? Go ahead and start a consultation. Our dermatologists will refer you straight away if an in-person appointment is better, and in that case you pay nothing.
