In short
Acne is a common inflammation of the oil glands and pores, causing blackheads, spots and sometimes deep nodules or cysts. It is mainly driven by hormones: your skin produces more sebum, which clogs the pores and makes them inflamed. Acne usually starts in puberty, but adults, especially women, can be affected too. It is not contagious, is not caused by poor hygiene and responds well to the right approach.
What is acne?
One of the most common
skin conditions, in people
of all ages.
Acne develops when your oil glands produce too much sebum and your pores become clogged. Together with dead skin cells and bacteria, this leads to inflammation: blackheads, spots and sometimes deep cysts under the skin.
Hormones are the main cause, especially during puberty, but also around your period, during pregnancy or when you change contraception. Greasy cosmetics and friction, for example from a helmet or a tight collar, can trigger acne. Diet and hygiene aren't direct causes, although stress can make existing spots worse. Acne most often appears on the face, but the back, chest and shoulders are common areas too.
Acne can weigh heavily on how you feel. Feeling self-conscious or embarrassed is completely understandable. So take it seriously: there are many treatments today that work well, tailored to your skin.

Symptoms of acne
Acne looks different for everyone. Read more about what you're seeing, or have your skin checked by a dermatologist straight away.
Blackheads and whiteheads form when oil and dead skin cells clog a pore. Blackheads are open, whiteheads are closed. Squeezing them often makes things worse: the right skincare keeps your pores clear.
More about blackheadsWhen a clogged pore becomes inflamed, a red, tender bump appears, sometimes with a white head. If they keep coming back or leave marks, a tailored treatment helps.
More about inflamed spotsDeep nodules sit far below the skin and don't come to a head. They're painful and easily leave scars. Have them checked by a dermatologist quickly.
More about lumps under the skinOily skin produces more sebum, often because of hormones or heredity. Stripping it aggressively backfires: your skin then makes even more oil.
More about oily skinYour back and chest have lots of oil glands. Sweat, tight clothing and friction make it worse, and these areas need different products from your face.
More about spots on your bodyAfter a deep or inflamed spot, the skin can be left with pits or uneven texture. Active acne needs to be under control first; after that, you can tackle scars in a targeted way.
More about acne scarsAfter a spot, your skin sometimes produces extra pigment. These marks usually fade on their own, but that can take months. Sunscreen and the right skincare speed things up.
More about dark marksSpots around your chin and jawline that come back in the days before your period often point to hormonal acne. Your dermatologist takes your cycle and contraception into account.

Mild acne
Mainly blackheads and whiteheads: small dots in clogged pores, without red inflammation. Often on the nose, chin and forehead.
Mild doesn't mean you should just leave it. With the right skincare, you stop clogged pores from becoming inflamed. Your dermatologist suggests a simple routine and tells you which products to avoid.

Hormonal acne
Flare-ups caused by hormonal changes, for example around your period, during pregnancy or when you change contraception. Often around the chin and jawline.
Because the cause comes from within, skincare alone doesn't always help. Your dermatologist looks at your cycle, your contraception and your medical history, and suggests a treatment that takes these into account.
%204%20(1).avif)
Cystic acne
Deep, painful inflammation under the skin that lasts days or even weeks. It doesn't come to a head and easily leaves scars.
Acting quickly is important here to prevent scarring. Treatment with tablets is often needed. Your dermatologist assesses the severity and tells you whether treatment can happen online or whether an in-person visit is better.
%201%20(1).avif)
Late-onset acne
Acne that persists or comes back after your twenties, often with a hormonal cause. Around one in five women is affected.
Adult skin is often more sensitive and drier than teenage skin. Your dermatologist combines a treatment for the spots with skincare that doesn't dry out your skin.

Body acne
Spots on your back, chest or shoulders. Sweat, tight clothing and friction often play a part.
Larger areas need different products from your face, such as a body wash or lotion. Your dermatologist also gives tips on sport, clothing and showering.

Acne scars
Pits or uneven texture in your skin that remain after the inflammation has healed.
Active acne needs to be under control first, otherwise new scars will form. After that, your dermatologist looks at which approach makes sense, from skincare that improves skin texture to in-clinic treatments.

Hyperpigmentation
Dark or red marks left behind after a spot. More common on darker skin.
These marks aren't scars and often fade on their own, but that can take months. Daily sunscreen and targeted skincare help them disappear faster.

How can I start a consultation for my child?
To use Skindr independently, you must be at least 18 years old. As a parent, you can start a consultation for your child through your own Skindr account.
Here's how it works:
- Start a new consultation and indicate that it is for your child.
- Enter your child's details.
- Upload clear photos and describe the skin concern as thoroughly as possible.
- Enter your own contact details.
As the parent, you communicate directly with the dermatologist through Skindr and can ask additional questions.
You can also start a consultation in the same way for another family member or someone you are responsible for.
What if I still need an in-person appointment?
In 95% of cases, the dermatologist can assess your skin concern online based on photos and the information you provide, and offer personalized medical advice. During the assessment, the dermatologist will also determine whether an in-person appointment or further examination is needed.
If your skin concern needs to be examined in person, the dermatologist will let you know and advise you on the next steps. Where possible, Skindr can help refer you for further examination.
Can I discuss multiple skin concerns during one consultation?
One consultation is intended for one patient and one specific skin concern. During the consultation, the dermatologist reviews everything related to that concern. If you have several separate skin concerns, such as acne and eczema, start a separate consultation for each one. This allows the dermatologist to assess each concern carefully and give it the attention it needs.

When should you see someone in person?
Skindr can help with most forms of acne. In a few situations, you're better off seeing your GP or a dermatologist in person:
You have large, painful nodules or cysts, and scars are forming.
You want your scars treated with a laser, a chemical peel or fillers.
You're pregnant or want to become pregnant, and you're taking an acne treatment in tablet form.
Your acne weighs on you so much that you feel low or insecure. Talk to your GP about this too.
Not sure? Go ahead and start a consultation. Our dermatologists will refer you straight away if an in-person appointment is better, and in that case you pay nothing.
