Millionsof people live with some form of eczema, from babies to adults. Skindr helps you keep the inflammation under control, without long waiting times.
In short
Eczema is an umbrella term for inflammation of the skin, with itching, redness and dry, flaky skin. Your skin barrier works less well, so your skin loses moisture faster and reacts more strongly to triggers. Eczema can start at any age, often comes in flare-ups and is not contagious. With good skincare and the right treatment, you can usually keep the symptoms well under control.
What is eczema?
A common skin condition, in babies and adults alike.
Eczema is an umbrella term for inflammation of the skin. Your skin becomes red and irritated, and is often very itchy. It can start at any age.
With eczema, the skin barrier is disrupted. Picture your skin as a protective wall: with eczema it has cracks, so moisture escapes and irritants get in more easily. That's why your skin is often dry and sensitive, and reacts quickly to triggers such as soap, stress or cold.
The impact goes beyond your skin. Itching can disturb your sleep and visible eczema can knock your confidence. Calm periods alternate with sudden flare-ups. With the right care and treatment, you can usually keep your eczema well under control.

Types of eczema our dermatologists treat

Atopic eczema
The most common form: an inborn tendency towards dry, sensitive skin that often starts at a young age. Mainly in skin folds and on the face.
Atopic eczema often runs in families alongside hay fever or asthma, and comes in flare-ups. Your dermatologist combines daily skincare with treatment for flare-ups, so your skin stays calm for longer.

Seborrhoeic eczema
Redness with yellowish, greasy scales in areas with lots of oil glands: scalp, eyebrows, around the nose and behind the ears.
A yeast that lives naturally on your skin plays a role: your skin overreacts to it. Hormones and stress can make this worse. On the scalp, a special shampoo helps keep the yeast under control. In babies, it's known as cradle cap.

Allergic contact eczema
An allergic reaction to a substance that touches your skin, such as nickel or fragrance. The patches appear where the contact was.
Your body has learned to see that substance as foreign and reacts to it every time you come into contact with it. Finding out what triggers the reaction and avoiding it is the most important step. Sometimes an allergy test is useful.

Irritant eczema
Eczema caused by substances that directly damage your skin barrier, such as cleaning products or frequent contact with water. Often on the hands.
It's common if you wash your hands a lot for work or handle chemicals. Protecting your hands, using a mild cleanser and moisturising often help your skin recover.

Nummular eczema
Clearly defined, coin-shaped patches, mainly on the lower legs, sometimes also on the arms or torso.
Often there's no clear cause. Very dry skin, combined with small injuries to the skin, probably plays a part. Moisturising well every day is the basis, and during flare-ups your dermatologist suggests an anti-inflammatory treatment.
Symptoms of eczema
Eczema looks different for everyone. Read more about what you're seeing, or have your skin checked by a dermatologist straight away.
Itching is the most typical symptom of eczema. Scratching damages your skin, which only makes the itch worse. A rich cream and keeping your skin cool already help. Your dermatologist can suggest a treatment to break that vicious circle.
More about itchingBecause the skin barrier is disrupted, your skin loses moisture faster. Applying a rich, fragrance-free cream every day is the basis of every eczema treatment, even when your skin is calm.
More about dry skinDuring a flare-up, your skin becomes inflamed: red, warm and sometimes swollen. An anti-inflammatory cream or ointment usually calms your skin quickly. Your dermatologist will tell you which strength is right and how to taper it off afterwards.
More about red patchesIn an acute phase, itchy blisters can form and burst, leaving your skin weepy and more vulnerable. Moist, yellow crusts, warmth or a fever can point to an infection, so have it checked quickly.
More about blistersIf a patch is scratched for a long time, your skin becomes thicker and leathery, with clear lines. This is called lichenification. It usually improves once the itching is under control.
More about thickened skinYellowish, greasy scales in areas with lots of oil glands, such as your scalp, eyebrows, the sides of your nose and behind your ears, often point to seborrhoeic eczema. In babies, it's known as cradle cap. A special shampoo can help, and your dermatologist will advise a targeted approach.

How can I start a consultation for my child?
To use Skindr independently, you must be at least 18 years old. As a parent, you can start a consultation for your child through your own Skindr account.
Here's how it works:
- Start a new consultation and indicate that it is for your child.
- Enter your child's details.
- Upload clear photos and describe the skin concern as thoroughly as possible.
- Enter your own contact details.
As the parent, you communicate directly with the dermatologist through Skindr and can ask additional questions.
You can also start a consultation in the same way for another family member or someone you are responsible for.
What if I still need an in-person appointment?
In 95% of cases, the dermatologist can assess your skin concern online based on photos and the information you provide, and offer personalized medical advice. During the assessment, the dermatologist will also determine whether an in-person appointment or further examination is needed.
If your skin concern needs to be examined in person, the dermatologist will let you know and advise you on the next steps. Where possible, Skindr can help refer you for further examination.
Can I discuss multiple skin concerns during one consultation?
One consultation is intended for one patient and one specific skin concern. During the consultation, the dermatologist reviews everything related to that concern. If you have several separate skin concerns, such as acne and eczema, start a separate consultation for each one. This allows the dermatologist to assess each concern carefully and give it the attention it needs.
Who can use Skindr?
To use Skindr independently, you must be at least 18 years old. As a parent, you can start a consultation for your child if they are under 18. You can also start a consultation for another family member or someone you are responsible for.

- Describe your skin concern and upload clear photos using your smartphone.
- A dermatologist reviews your photos and the information you provided.
- If additional information is needed, the dermatologist may ask you to provide more details or upload additional photos.
- After the assessment, you receive personalized medical advice and clear information about the next steps in the Skindr app.
- You’ll receive a notification when your dermatologist’s advice is available.
- You can then ask additional questions through the chat. How long you can do this depends on the type of consultation you selected.
If your skin concern cannot be sufficiently assessed online, the dermatologist will let you know and advise you on the next steps.
When should you see someone in person?
Skindr can help with most forms of eczema. In a few situations, you're better off seeing your GP or a dermatologist in person:
Your skin becomes more painful and warmer, yellow crusts appear or you develop a fever. This can point to an infection.
You suspect an allergy to a particular substance and want an allergy test.
Your eczema is widespread and doesn't improve with creams and ointments, so a treatment that works on your whole body may be needed.
Your child has severe eczema and you think diet plays a role. Don't change what they eat without medical guidance.
Not sure? Go ahead and start a consultation. Our dermatologists will refer you straight away if an in-person appointment is better, and in that case you pay nothing.
