More than half of 25-44 year olds are open to teledermatology

March 30, 2023

Looking for a solution for your acne or eczema? Or have that one mole checked? As many as one in three Belgians is open to doing this via teleconsultation, according to a study by online dermatology platform Skindr and research firm Profacts. And if you ask millennials, there is definitely something for the future. Because, as many as half of them say they are open to teledermatology. Not illogical, when you know that traditional dermatologists face endless waiting times.

Key takeaways:

  • 1 in 3 Belgians is open to digital consultations with a dermatologist
  • Online platforms such as Skindr score very well with up to 50% of Gen Z & Millennials (25-44 year olds)
  • With a waiting time of up to 48 hours, teledermatology is about 90 times faster than the waiting time with a traditional dermatologist (+/- 6 months)
  • Saving time & flexibility are the most important motivations for 25-44 year olds

Nowadays, fresh and radiant skin is high on the beauty agenda for many of us. We mainly owe this to social media and their many filters. No wonder, then, that more and more people are seeking the help of a dermatologist. And that is exactly where the problem lies. Because with one dermatologist for every 14,000 inhabitants, our Belgian dermatologists' agendas are heavily overbooked. It should come as no surprise that more and more people are returning to digital solutions. For example, a study by the online dermatology platform Skindr shows that one out of three Belgians is open to a digital consultation. Especially with millennials platforms such as Skindr score particularly well and the percentage rises to whopping 50%.

This popularity can be explained in various ways. The main reason? Save time. While a traditional physical consultation requires you to wait about four to eight months before seeing a doctor, the online dermatology platform Skindr will help you within an average of 48 hours. That is no less than 90 times faster than with a traditional dermatologist. In addition, you will immediately receive a treatment plan and prescription. A flexible approach that is particularly popular with Gen Z and millennials. Such 49% of 25 to 34 year olds and 50% of 35 to 44 year olds states that they are open to teledermatology because it takes less time and is easier to combine with their busy lifestyle. Something that is seen as a win-win by a large part of millennials (53%) and Gen Z (40.68%). In addition, the threshold for going to the doctor with sensitive conditions, such as STIs, remains high. An online dermatology platform like Skindr therefore lowers the threshold (Gen Z: 27.81%, millennials: 29.1%) and ensures that people can consult a doctor without embarrassment.

The need for efficiency and flexibility

Skindr's founders, Jochen Boeykens and Dr. Annelies Avermaete, are therefore responding to the need for efficiency and flexibility with their online dermatology platform. This is how they came up with a digital tool that puts the patient first and relieves dermatologists. And that in record time. However, the short waiting time does not mean that you are sacrificing quality at Skindr. On the contrary, short waiting times are just part of their quality service. In addition, with the online dermatology platform, you always speak to a doctor via a chat function. And around 47% of Belgians respond very positively to that in the study.

Supplement to classical dermatologist

Nevertheless, co-founder dermatologist Annelies Avermaete emphasizes that Skindr does not exist to replace dermatologists, but as a supplement. For example, the online dermatology platform also does not focus on life-threatening skin conditions, but does focus on acne, for example. For example, the most common skin conditions on the online dermatology platform are acne and Rosacea (31%), eczema (22%), and hair and sweat problems. Skindr therefore puts a lot of time into developing treatment plans that provide the best possible solutions for specific skin conditions.

One thing is certain: due to the corona crisis and the digital acceleration, both patients and doctors have matured. It is a trend that will continue to develop in the coming years and will find a clearer entry into our society. This is how Skindr hopes to continue offering the best dermatology experience where people can be helped quickly and for a long time and can follow up their entire treatment online.
