Taking care of eczema-prone skin requires extra attention, and did you know that your routine can change seasonally? Each season brings specific challenges for people with eczema. Here are practical tips for protecting and caring for your skin all year round.
Winter: Prevent dehydration due to cold and dry air
The winter months can be extra tough for eczema skin. The combination of cold air outside and dry indoor heating often makes the skin drier and more sensitive.
- Use an intensive moisturizer that is specifically suitable for eczema. Preferably choose a product without perfume or irritants.
- Avoid long, hot showers. While it's tempting to warm up under a hot stream, it can damage the natural skin barrier.
- Protect your skin from the cold by wearing gloves, scarves and possibly a face mask. This prevents direct exposure to icy air.
Summer: Protect against the sun and prevent irritation
In summer, it is important to protect your eczema-sensitive skin from the sun, but also against irritation caused by sweat and chlorinated water.
- Use a sunscreen with a high SPF that is suitable for sensitive skin. Mineral sunscreens are often better for eczema because they are less irritating.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during the hottest hours of the day (11:00 to 15:00).
- After swimming or sweating, rinse your skin with lukewarm water to remove salt, chlorine, and sweat residue. Then apply a soothing moisturizer (sun) cream.
Spring and autumn: Get your skin ready for change
The transition seasons such as spring and fall involve rapid weather changes, which can make eczema worse.
- Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers to avoid extra stress on your skin.
- Hydrate with creams that have been specially developed for eczema and offer protection against dryness and temperature changes.
- Watch for allergy triggers such as pollen in the spring, which can cause irritation for many people with eczema. Consider protecting your skin with a barrier cream.
