Hair loss is very common and can be completely harmless. However, there are also situations where hair loss can be a sign of an underlying health problem. It's important to know when you have a dermatologist should consult in case of extreme hair loss to make the correct diagnosis and receive appropriate treatment. What are important warning signs?

When is hair loss normal?

There is a lot of uncertainty and taboo attached to it, but actually hair loss - especially among men - is a very normal phenomenon. 70% of all men eventually develop androgenetic alopecia, the hereditary form of hair loss. That in itself is not a problem and in most cases simply has to do with your genes. Is it in your family? Then there is a good chance that you will face the same fate. Of course, you can always go to a dermatologist to slow down the process a bit and stimulate hair regrowth, but isn't it a reason to panic or a sign of an underlying problem?

Do you notice any of the signs below? Then we recommend that you definitely contact your doctor or your dermatologist.

10 Sudden hair loss

If you suddenly lose clearly more hair than usual and you can't explain why, this can be a sign of a hair disorder. But from when is hair loss really alarming? Normally, a person loses about 50 to 100 hairs per day, and that number can increase while washing or combing the hair. If you notice that you have much more hair loss to extreme hair loss from one day to the next, it is important to let your dermatologist know. Together with you, they can quickly deal with any underlying problem.

02 Hair loss at a young age

Hair loss certainly does not only affect older people. In men, for example, hereditary baldness (androgenetic alopecia) can begin as early as the teenage years. In women, hair loss can occur due to hormonal fluctuations after childbirth. Some hair diseases, such as alopecia areata, can even occur in both children and adults. However, hair loss in young people may indicate underlying problems such as hormonal imbalance or a medical condition. In addition, early intervention can prevent further hair loss.

03 Hair loss with itching, pain and/or inflammation

Do you notice that hair loss is associated with scalp irritations, such as itching, burning, or even pain? These symptoms may indicate an underlying infection, skin disease, or inflammatory condition that requires treatment.

04 Diffused female hair loss

If you, as a woman, experience thinning hair in a recognizable pattern (= diffuse hair loss during separation), it is important to consult a doctor. This may indicate a hormonal imbalance, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or other underlying conditions that require treatment.

05 Persistent hair loss after pregnancy

Hair loss after childbirth, also known as postpartum hair loss, is normal and temporary (= a form of acute telogen effluvium after a clear moment of stress). If hair loss persists or worsens after the first few months after giving birth, it is wise to consult a doctor to rule out permanent hair loss.
